BOCES Training for Educators  2022-2023

GSA Kickoff Day!

Wednesday, 9/14, 8:30 – 11:30 am

According to the Trevor Project in 2021, only one-third of LGBTQ+ youth found their homes to be LGBTQ+ affirming. Due to this lack of understanding and support within the home, GSAs (Gender and Sexuality Alliances) and similarly named youth groups can become a lifesaving, safe space for students. Does your school currently have or need a GSA? Would you like to start a chapter or feel like you’re struggling with your existing group? If so, please join the educators from GLOW OUT and the ultimate LGBTQ+ youth whisperers from GLYS of WNY for brunch and an energizing morning learning the “nuts and bolts” of running a successful group. Already have a thriving group? Please come, share your wisdom, and help us build this community of advisors and allies!

Understanding Our Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Students

Monday, October 24, 1 – 3 pm

Are you trying to get a better understanding of gender and your gender non-conforming (GNC) students? Think you “get” it, but would like a deeper dive into the personal and even medical aspects of the transgender experience? Want some best practices you can easily and immediately implement within your classroom? If so, please join our team of doctors from UMMC’s Family Medicine Practice and educators from GLOW OUT! who are making their way across the GLOW region, trying to support, connect, and uplift as many LGBTQ+ youth as possible. Join us in making our schools and region a safer place to belong!

Safe Zone for Schools

Wednesday, March 1, 2023, 12 – 3 pm

According to the 2021 Gallup Poll, 21% of Gen Z identified as LGBT, with trends supporting younger generations having ever-expanding views and experiences of gender identity and sexual orientation. Educators need to be culturally sensitive and responsive to this shift within their classrooms to ensure a safe and meaningful experience for all students. If you are looking for ways to better understand and support your LGBTQ+ students, then please join the education team from GLOW OUT! for this fun and engaging afternoon together. Topics will include language basics, differences between sexual orientation and gender identity, the experiences of coming out and being transgender, as well as ample best practices for building inclusive, safe spaces within your school and communities.
